Cavemann wrote: Yes, those are the icons I remember.
You can get them in view by changing your personal theme to something else than default theme.
Cavemann wrote: It looks like they get in the way of the screenshots, too bad.
Yes, it sux. If this icon thing is taking real shape i will need to re-adjust some posts as it becomes .. uhm .. messy otherwise :D
Cavemann wrote: Amiga style wallpapers.
ssst, this was my little secret to have some cool theming other people did not know about ;) But i will post them to the list. BTW: Aren't you able to do that yourself (suggesting a link i mean) ?
Cavemann wrote: Btw, I don't think it is necessary to have a script .....
Ah yes, but that means manual labour ... and you know what they say about lazy people ... :D I would also suggest more categories. E.g. at least one for aros distributions so that they all can stay on one page. Now, if you look for something (and the list grows taller) you have to search for a weblink... which imho sounds a bit counterproductive.
amigamia wrote Hello folks! Thank you so much for keeping Arosworld alive and updated.
I thought that was why you hired me.... ?? btw where is that ferrari you promised ? ;p But on a more serious note, thank you for the appreciation.
amigamia wrote ... We can vote some of them off the island, I am open to suggestions.
I have to think a bit harder for giving a usefull answer, as my gut tells me there is something else not quite right in that department but i cannot express what exactly atm. I will definitely get back to you on that. Also it would be nice if we got a little more feedback from others on that as well.
amigamia wrote ...However, none of the ones I found so far look clean and sexy as the Elin theme. Still looking... :-)
It was probably not ment to critize, just an observation :) Personally i dislike the standard theme :sorry: (one of the reasons being it is very hard to distinquish between posts now). But that is strictly on a personal note, and i have no desire to change this. Also i can choose another theme that fits me better, so no problems here :) However i do suggest we need something more spicey....
amigamia wrote As an additional note. I want to create an AROS video commercial competition.
Well, actually i like this idea a lot. I am fairly new when it comes to Aros, so i have no idea if there are any good promo movies out there that does a good job. As i said i am not really multimedia minded, so i do not spend time sifting out all those video-sites.
amigamia wrote What do you guys think? :-)
I am just affraid the gusto might be very low, as i've seen more (good) initiatives bleeding into a silent dead. And i have no idea as of why. There sure must be some multimedia students out there that (c/w)ould produce a good aros promo as an assignment or something. Personally i am not good at such things, just let me code and let others take over the graphics and audio department :D But as i said, i like the idea. Especially if there are no real aros promo's out there. regards,

Re: News cleanup
Hello folks! Thank you so much for keeping Arosworld alive and updated. You are absolutely right for the news categories. Some of them may not be aros related but at the time of the site creation, the CMS (Php-Fusion) came with some predefined ones and good looking icons. So I decided to create as many as I could on top of what I already had to make sure I wouldn't miss anything. We can vote some of them off the island, I am open to suggestions. As for the categories icons showing in the news posts, that is a known problem with php-fusion version 7 and themes for version 6. I did try to make the necessary php code changes to make them appear again but it was taking too much of my time and it seemed more of a mock-up than a fix. The Elin theme used for this site was never updated to work with php-fusion 7, so I will need to find another one. However, none of the ones I found so far look clean and sexy as the Elin theme. Still looking... :-) As an additional note. I want to create an AROS video commercial competition. The general idea is to make AROS users compete for the 10 best AROS short video commercial. The videos could be included in the AROS distro (much like some of the backgrounds from an earlier competition), they would also give more publicity to aros on youtube, etc. I am still trying to come up with some more rules and guidelines but I am open for feedbacks. An inspiration example is the Video 1 link you see on the left menu on this site main page. What do you guys think? :-)

Re: News cleanup
Yes, those are the icons I remember. It looks like they get in the way of the screenshots, too bad. Please consider adding these links too: Amiga style wallpapers. http://www.amiga-look.org/category/wallpapers Mainly Amiga Os4 site, discussions open to all Amiga flavors. http://amigaworld.net/ Btw, I don't think it is necessary to have a script so that the web links are always in perfect order. Just an occasional adjustment so that the web links are more or less listed with the most popular on top. That way the most popular links would be the easiest to find.
.. Iirc, there used to be icons for each category, which was sort of cool too.
you mean like this ?:
My ArosWorld site feedback would be that imo, the poll is due to be changed.
True, i will try ask admin if i can influence that in the future (now i can't).
And it would be nice to have a link to the ArosVision 68k distro in the Web links section.
Could have sworn i already posted that one. Consider it done.
Also it might be better to list the web links in order of popularity (hits).
Better let admin answer that, as i have no idea if that would be possible with current scripts.
Is this what you are looking for?
Ah yes exactly. My hero :D I tried different numbers, all to no avail, but this is what i indeed was talking about. Thank you. regards,

Re: News cleanup
Hi, Some of you might or might not have noticed that i've taken the liberty to clean up the newsitems a little. Some items got another category (which was imo more suited) and now all newsitems have a prefix which indicate some sort of a sub-category. I needed to change some news-items title for that, so i hope original posters won't mind. Still i am not completely happy with the things i did (for example mui-extensions imo belongs to both coding and Aros-system), but at least it is more consistent now. The idea here is, to make it easier if things needs to be re- and/or sub-categorized. Also it gives a littlebit more professional look to the outsideworld and newcomers. I would kindly ask other newsposters to do the same, or if you are unsure (or can't be bothered) to leave the news-category empty. That way it is easier to adjust afterwards. You also might have noticed me detailing about releases in the archives, and as i assume this was not done so in the past (only a weekly or so list that got posted). You may or may not like that. Mind you, that when i started posting i had no notion of the upcoming aros-playground website and it felt some of the work published in the archives deserved a bit more attention than only a single-liner in a weekly post. Still some topics are serious lacking when it comes to the news-items. For instance, the wole multimedia and showcase subject is almost completely ignored by me. Mostly because i simply lack the time to keep that up and also because it is not really my topic. Imo, also some topic-categories are completely strange for Aros like for instance apple, windows and php. Although ofcourse there might be some topics that fall under those categories, such as virtualization or running Aros hosted. Well, that's all i wanted to say for now i guess. If you think you can do a better job, or fill in some gaps then please don't hesitate to contact admin and show us how things can be done in a better way ;) Feel free to comment otherwise. regards, P.S. In the topic-category movies i wanted to post about the development-cycle of Aros (movie title something like "10 years Aros development in 10 minutes" ), but i seem to be unable to find a match. Perhaps there is someone who knows the location (or precise title) of this movie ?

Re: Articles HowTo ?
@cavemann
I do not know much about web pages or the code tag.
Here is just a random board that popped up on searching for the code-tag. They do a much better job explaining then i do :D * as a late reply -> Well well, will you look at this :D
Program what_is_this; begin writeln('Could it be a car ?'); Writeln('Could it be a airplane ?'); If (whatisit = acodetag) then writeln ('No its a codetag i just found'); writeln('with no support for pascal higlighting?'); end.

Thanks for the info.
You welcome :)
But keep in mind that Paolone has written an Icaros manual, and unfortunately he has to ask people to read it again and again
Indeed, and i think it is a real shame. paolo put in so much effort to get all things right, taking the reader practically by the hand. So wouldn't it be nice to just answer RTFM ? ;) But on a more serious note: Since aros is getting more and more attention the Aros community (unfortunately?) also see more and more people popping up on the boards with absolutely no clue at all (not that i have for that matter). I have seen complete boards/projects go down the drain due to their own succes, not being able to keep up with the nonsense that comes along with it. When that time comes, i like to be ready for it :D
...But there have been some recent major news items that should have been posted by now...
I do agree on everything you said there, although i personally would like to mention everything (tis the least that can be done for the efforts of the devs)
What do you know? Let the cat out of the bag
hehe. Did you read our wiki our wiki lately ? Not saying that it will ever come to this examples or this is something that "the powers that be" envisioned but you can get a hint (on how it could look like) by looking at this, this, this or this (btw a complete list can be found here) ;) regards, P.S. hmz we seem to get a bit off-topic here :S

Re: Articles HowTo ?
@magorium,
On other (programing) boards i post, the actual posted text in not tagged at all (only with a code tag).
I do not know much about web pages or the code tag. Thanks for the info.
I'm getting fed-up with repeating myself over and over again. so writing it all down should benefit me, so i can write RTFM
It is a good Idea to write an article to avoid repeating the same thing again and again. But keep in mind that Paolone has written an Icaros manual, and unfortunately he has to ask people to read it again and again :|
I have no problem with doing something like you proposed and perhaps i will (seriously) look into it. But it needs a little update first to take on such an endevour as a lot of things (which i mostly alread forgot again O-o) changed since the last post. Also english is not my native tongue and when translating i realized my english is not sufficient enough.
If you decide to try your hand at the Aros homepage. A little will go a long way. The home page is not the history of Aros. So you don't have to mention all the events since the last report (unless you want to). But there have been some recent major news items that should have been posted by now. And also your english skills are good enough, but if you have doubts, you can have someone review your text.
I agree with the bad impression it leaves for newcomers on aros.org. But i believe something is in the pipeline of changing the site etc.
What do you know? Let the cat out of the bag :D

Re: Articles HowTo ?
@caveman:
I'm surprised he hasn't responded yet.
I was not really surprised as he seems a bit busy lately ;) Thank you for the link you posted, it was very helpfull. :)
If you are going to have snippets of code in your articles, Imo, it would be better for the reader to be able to cut and paste it, than to deal with tags for color highlighting.
Indeed, if it would work that way. On other (programing) boards i post, the actual posted text in not tagged at all (only with a code tag). The content manager knows about the code/tag discovers the programming language automatically and so the actual pasted source was not adjusted at all. It is just displayed as highlighted/colorized to the user who reads it. But again, i do not know how it works here, so i probably have to find out myself ;) btw your 2 cents about the format i should concider where very helpfull. In that regard we think alike ;) I also like offline reading for reference material.
I'm curious about the subject matter of these articles.
well, i have all kinds of interrests but initially it would be to benefit myself ;) I'm getting fed-up with repeating myself over and over again. so writing it all down should benefit me, so i can write RTFM :D in your other post you wrote:
Take a look at the Aros homepage
Yes i know this :) I started translating some message in my native tongue. Because i lack knowledge i thought it was a good idea to translate each new article and at the same time translate 1 older article so eventually all news overthere got translated Ihelping me in the process to understand aros internals and history a little). Well.. this happened once uptil now :D I have no problem with doing something like you proposed and perhaps i will (seriously) look into it. But it needs a little update first to take on such an endevour as a lot of things (which i mostly alread forgot again O-o) changed since the last post. Also english is not my native tongue and when translating i realized my english is not sufficient enough. I agree with the bad impression it leaves for newcomers on aros.org. But i believe something is in the pipeline of changing the site etc. I think it is wise to see what happens first. Thank you for your time and opinion(s) :appreciated: @amigamia: When i find myself some time i will look into it. Thank you very much for setting things up. I did not know about the rtf part -> very interresting. I really need to get myself a good editor first or try my existing ones to see if that will work in conjunction with the board. In that regard: am i able to undo (my own) screw-ups ? :D regards,

Re: Articles HowTo ?
Hi Magorium, Articles used to be part of this board but since I had to rebuild all from scratch, I haven't focused on the articles yet. I am glad you are showing interest in this section and to answer your questions, I am going to reactivate it. Right now, there is no category to write articles. So what I'll do, I'll just create an AROS generic category and give you rights to write in there. You can copy and paste in the text field but I think you can write off line as long as it is in RTF format. I'll PM you when I have the category ready and your rights setup accordingly. :)

Re: Articles HowTo ?
Ps - If you enjoy writing and don't mind a little volunteer work. Aros has the perfect job for you. Take a look at the Aros homepage http://aros.sourceforge.net/ There are so few updates, people who go there sometimes get the impression that Aros is no longer active. A short news article every couple of months would make a big difference. If interested, Saimon69 can answer questions, or 4play at Aros-Exec.

Re: Articles HowTo ?
The best person to answer your technical questions would be Amigamia. I'm surprised he hasn't responded yet. Also Saimon69, could give you good information too. Saimon69 wrote many of the articles that used to be here. But mostly they were reprinted from his blog binarydoodles. If you want to check them out. http://binarydoodles.ilcannocchiale.it/ If you are going to have snippets of code in your articles, Imo, it would be better for the reader to be able to cut and paste it, than to deal with tags for color highlighting. As a reader, html is great for something I will skim through once, especially if there are be many links or ads. But if an article is something I might want to review for future reference, then I would also have a pdf file to download. That way I won't forget where I found the article, or add yet another bookmark, or wonder about a dead link. Just my 2 cents. From your posts, it seems that you have a wide range of interests. I'm curious about the subject matter of these articles. I look forward to seeing them.

Re: Articles HowTo ?
Articles HowTo ? Hi, I perhaps might be interrested (in the future) to spend some time on an article (or series of articles) for aros. In (very early) preperation of that, i'm in the process of deciding to start a blog (or something similar), doing it in a offline form (like pdf/html or something similar) uploading it for others to download or using an excisting infrastructure (like aw.org). In that regard, feel free to make any suggestion at all :) I seem to remember, before this board went up again, that there were some articles available, but for the life of me i cannot remember how they looked like. Also i could not find anything related on this site like a HowTo or a FAQ concerning articles. So, i have a few questions concerning making articles on aw.org: - is any registered user of aw.org allowed to make/start an article or does one have to apply/get clearance for it somewhere first ? - I noticed the board is using php-fusion. I looked overthere already but could not find anything similar like this board. I would like to have a (renewed) impression on how an article would look like in practise. Any available sites that somebody know of that could give me an fairly good impression (in relation to aw.org) ? Also, i got a bit lost at the fusion site as the documents i looked at/found seems to be more orientated towards setting up a site (which i do not care of). - What would be the format in which an article need to be written ? I have not a clue as of what is possible/allowed or not. Think along the way of (embedded) pictures, tables, paragraphs, lists etc. Is there perhaps a manual somewhere or does it simply requires just plain html ? - In relation to the above question, could i write an article offline and post/upload it as an article online so it could be avoided to do a manual conversion ? - Does the article(engine) supports automatic highlighting of source-code like c, pascal, amiga E, arexx, etc. ? - Are there any restrictions on an article. Like length/size ? Is it possible to do a series of articles (linked toghether) ? Is an article more along the way like a chapter ? - Is it possible for (other) users to respond to an article. Could the article be re-edited to reflect f.e. user comments -> think along he way of a FAQ that needs to be updated often. - Is it possible to attach e.g. example files to an article or does that requires external storage space ? My preference would be that i could edit offline (leaving more choices for me available as where and how to publish), somehow get it to be uploaded without requiring manual conversion and ofcourse support for (automatic) source-code highlighting. It would be nice if this could be managed using aros, but i settle for tools i have experience with under windblows. In short, too many questions (and i probably forgot to write down most of them ) :) Thanks in advance for any replies. regards,
