Presentation & Distro questions!

Hi all,
I'm Luca, from Italy!
I'd like to try AROS, but I'm not sure what distro to choose.
The latest version of most of these distributions is quite old in time, dating back 3-4 years.
The only recent release, as far as I can see, is from AROS One.
I prefer testing something up-to-date, so my question is: is AROS One the right distro for me?

Please don't be offended if I misunderstood anything in my distribution research! I'm sure that every distro have their value points!

Thanks,
Luca

Hi Luca and welcome to the forum, regarding AROS One my Distribution I can confirm that it is up to date with the latest Core, and includes all the fixes and upgrades done to date.

AROS One is based on Wanderer (Workbench), inspired by my OS3.9 AfA One, is this distinguishes it from other distributions based on Dopus5 Magellan.

Also on AROS One you will find a modern look, all the Icons, there are various types and shapes (to choose from) are in DualPNG, all of the same size and of very good quality, together with the backgrounds and many other graphical aspects have been created by me (70 years old Italian User AMiGA)

There are still other Distributions, it's up to you to choose !

Hello AMIGASYSTEN and thanks for your reply.
Sorry for the silly question, just to make sure I understand correctly: if I try to port some of my software to AROS One (just for fun), will they be binary-compatible with other AROS distributions?

Yeah! AROS One looks very nice judging by the screenshots I saw today!

Well, it's time to find a blank USB stick and boot up!

Thanks a lot,
Luca

Hello Luca91

If you compile your apps for AROS One x86 (x86 version of AROS) then you can use them on all similar up-to-date distros of AROS such as Tiny AROS. Icaros Desktop, however, hasn't been maintained lately. Also, there was a recent change to C library but deadwood or anyone who works with the newest core can explain. AROS One x86 and Tiny AROS use the new core system files.

Thanks everyone for the warm welcome!

So, I tried booting the latest AROS One on my DELL Optiplex 5040, but it can’t boot (waiting for bootable media). Of course it was expected, and I know that this isn’t supported hardware but I wanted to give it a try anyway.

I’m going to create a VM Wink

check whether IDE device emulation is enabled in the bios

I can't find anything like that in this EFI (IDE device emulation on USB is probably not supported). This Optiplex has a DVD-ROM drive, perhaps trying a boot from there might worth a try?

@Amiwell79 thank you for your support so far.
I'm buring the ISO file to a dvd right now. I don't have high hopes that it will work (and even if it does manage to boot, I think I wont have eth due to missing drivers etc), but I still want to give it a try.
That said, I'll anyway create 2 VMs and I'll install Tiny Aros in one of them.
What's your update policy regarding Tiny Aros tho?

I've tried both AROS One and Tiny Aros on DVD, but both won't boot.
I'll go ahead and create two VMs.

Thank you for your time Smile

Lucio check HERE the compatibility of your Hardware, my advice anyway is to try AROS as first time on Virtual Machine where hardware compatibility is total.

Other advice is to use VMware, easier to configure than VirtualBox, Audio and Network will be configured automatically without setting any parameters, follow the attached video !

https://www.youtu...uE_B-1x0Ss

If you burned the USB image on a Pendrive, if it does not boot on your PC, try it on some other PC !

Warning !!! the USB image of AROS One was created with Rufus 3.x, so incompatible with the new versions of Rufus 4.x

From the next version the AROS One image will be generated with the new Rufus 4.x, consequently it will no longer be compatible with older versions of Rufus 3.x
