We have an Icon Editor!

I am really excited to announce that Paul Bloedel has successfully built an AROS version of his Hollywood-based Icon Editor, which will be included in Icaros Desktop 2.2.5 under the "Utilities" drawer. This means that it will be available on both Live! and Light edition of the distribution, since I feel that a proper editor for icons should be part of the 'core utils' that an Amiganoid system

First beta of Icaros 2.2.5 and other exciting news

The first internal build of Icaros Desktop 2.2.5 is now available to beta testers, developers and supporters (patrons who are pledging $15 or more on Patreon), which include all the work done on Icaros in the last month. I kindly ask everyone who has got access to this beta for feedback: please test it deeply and report any problem you may find. As you can see from the following picture, the

I got more... "advice"!

Yesterday morning I installed a new test virual machine and, as usual, I needed to know its own IP address. So I opened the shell and gave the 'ifconfig -a' command to get it. I wondered if I could have something better than that, like a way to get the same information with two mouse clicks, and I implemented a "IP Address" option in Magellan's "Icaros" menu, which basically targeted ifconfig's

Basic introduction/tutorial video added to HostBridge page

If you still wonder what HostBridge can do, here is the answer! I've added this introductory video-tutorial to the HostBridge page, so you can see how using Windows and Linux applications is easy, when Icaros Desktop is running in hosted mode! By the way, starting with version 2.2.5, Icaros will include also a couple of double-state icon packs so you can associate HostBridge's scripts to

Tutorial: creating 800+ double-state icons in less than 10 minutes

A new tutorial video is now available on Patreon. In this lesson, we will learn how to create double-state icons under Icaros Desktop 2.2.4 using just three tools: the RNO Effects program, the AROS shell, and a few commands in the right sequence. This tutorial explains how to apply specific graphic effects to a whole iconset through RNO's batch converter, and then how to compose dual-state PNG

Converting 800+ images in a single passage with Icaros 2.2.4

Early adopters of Icaros Desktop 2.2.4 might have noticed the addition of a brand new graphics program in Extras:Design. It's called RNO Effects and, in my humble opinion, it fills one of the longest missing holes in this department: batch conversion and procedural application of image effects. With this program, you can apply one or more effects to a whole set of images, no matter their size or

Icaros Desktop 2.2.4 now available for download

A brand new version of Icaros Desktop is now available to everyone. V2.2.4 includes new brilliant features and applications, small but important fixes and, for you Amiga lovers, a vintage GUI that can be selected after installation, which reproduces the plain old Amiga OS 3.1 interface. First of all, I wish to thank JPV for porting RNO Effects to AROS. He sent me v1.0 during last summer, and in

Video of GUI choice at first startup on Icaros 2.2.4

Here's a short video showing new Icaros Deskop GUI selection at work. As I said earlier, the new selector will appear at first boot, after installation onto the hard drive (no, doing this also when booting from the DVD-ROM isn't possible and it won't be considered). Update: in the final release of Icaros 2.2.4, Intuition errors have been fixed. No requester to retry or cancel changes appears.

vic, a new command

This is just another little, but funny detail I have decided to add to your AROS distribution. You may have noticed that, since the birth of Icaros Desktop 2.2.x, I have stopped updating the image shown by the 'About' applet, which always says "Icaros Desktop v2.2" no matter if it was 2.2.0, 2.2.1 or a more recent one. A way to identify the installed version of Icaros Desktop, however, exists:

Video Tutorial for Patrons: creating AmiBridge Shortcuts

The first video-tutorial published on Patreon explains how to create an app shortcut in AmiBridge. These shortcuts allow running Amiga apps in a sandboxed environment, which can be customized to fullfit some specific application needs. In this tutorial, we learn how to create a shortcut for EaglePlayer and avoid audio stuttering during playback. > The video tutorial on Patreon.

Another Icaros 2.2.4 Light preview for supporters available on Patreon

The beta I published two days ago was a little too raw... but you know: they're called beta and not final releases for a reason ;-) Anyway, in the latest two days I completed integration of UHCTools (which needed proper execution attributes on the older beta) and introduced a new interesting option which lets user choose the default GUI philosophy right after installation: either a classic,

This is for classic Amiga lovers

Main goal of Icaros Desktop, you know, is "providing the best and most modern Amiga environment on the PC platform" and this clearly begins with the GUI. I have made the best I could to provide a good Workbench replacemente using Magellan, however after so many years many people still find it distracting to use and (someone even said) "unnatural". I will spare you from my thoughts about the need

First preview of Icaros 2.2.4 for supporters on Patreon

A glimpse of the next version of Icaros Desktop is now available to supporters on Patreon (supporters are those who are pledging 15+ euros/month). They can download and install it into a virtual machine, (please don't use it in your production environment, because it is not polished and finished yet). There's also a list of what I have done so far from Icaros 2.2.3, but since this is the Light

New community forum and donation policy

Beginning with today, our old forum on AROS-EXEC will not be available anymore. The AROS community has a new home at ae.amigalife.org and so has Icaros. The old messages are still available in read-only mode: topics which would still need answers must be re-opened on the new platform. For now, I have already set up a welcome message with few mandatory links. Icaros website has been modified
