Hi,
I made some tweaks to audio part of Augustus & Julius, since the tests from @retrofaza found some crackling in audio I implemented the following tweaks:

1. Sometimes audio may crackle so I added the option to set audio rate, buffer and channels from tooltypes. Projects has already the tooltypes set with default values, you can change them as you wish (beware using valid values!).

2. MP3 support is now enabled to use MP3 HQ music files following the tutorial here: https://github.co.../tag/music

@sonountaleban - Not related to a particular game, but is there support for the SDL gfx library? I saw on AROS Archive there is a very old version, but it looks it was built for the old AROS 32 bit...

SDL2_gfx isn't in the SDK right now. Do you need it for a specific project, or just in general? Maybe you could try porting it to AROS 64 - it'd be a fun challenge, and everyone would benefit Smile

Yeah, few months ago I played OpenXcom (the open source/cross platform version of the glorious UFO Enemy Unknown) and I'd like to port to AROS. It uses SDL 1.2 and that gfx library and I don't mind to work first on the latter. I gave a look at that old SDL_gfx file on AROS Archive and the author wrote he didn't change the original source code, apart a small fix, I think it will be same for the 64 bit version, isn't it?

It's quite possible SDL_gfx will compile with only minor changes. I checked SDL_gfx for SDL1 in contrib repository and it doesn't need any changes at all.

The ideal is to have the version 2.0.22 or later. The current AROS 32-bit seems to be 2.0.16. Where's this contrib repository?

@retrofaza - Gloom is back in a big way - the cult-classic Amiga FPS is now running at full speed as a 64-bit version on AROS, so get ready for some old-school carnage, reimagined.

Hello,
Is there a way to contact the author (Andiweli)? Basically the sub-games that occasionally appear don't work, if I touch their screens I have a "teleport" effect and nothing else happens. I think it's a bug that belongs to the original code made by that developer.

I don't have any contact to Andiweli. And how do I get to those mini-games? I've never played Gloom much. I didn't even know something like that was in there Grin

They are quite easy to find, each world has one and they are clones of Space Invaders and Defender.

I found the way to get in touch with him, via his Github page.

UPDATE: He quickly replied and told me the bug exists since Swizpig's code...

I checked the Windows versions to make sure this wasn't just an AROS issue. Sure enough, the mini-games don't work anywhere.

Hi!
I'm back with:
Dethrace 0.10.1 for AROS!

What is Dethrace?
Dethrace is an open-source reimplementation of the Carmageddon game engine.

Project goals

  • Faithfully reproduce the original gameplay from Carmageddon 1
  • Provide documentation in the form of code and docs of the internal workings of the Carmageddon 1 engine
  • Fix bugs in the original game logic
  • Provide quality of life improvements (eg support for modern platforms, higher resolutions, higher framerates, increased limits for cars/tracks etc)

Usage Mode

You can use dethrace in four ways:
GUI Mode (recommended, made with Zune/MUI):
Start dethrace_gui and use it, this will create/modify dethrace.ini under
PROGDIR:, dethrace executable must be in PROGDIR:, if not using "Custom" it
will search for c1, c1demo, spdemo or spxmasdemo drawers from PROGDIR:.
INI Mode:
Modify ini and start dethrace icon, dethrace.ini must be in PROGDIR:.
Command line mode:
Read the docs and use the flags, better use a script and call it with
Execute specifying at least "stack 1000000" before launching dethrace.
Standalone:
Put dethrace where your game is and use dethrace icon instead of using
CARMA.EXE, if you want to change some options enable USE_TOOLTYPES and
set other TOOLTYPES.

Four default drawers are available and used by GUI:
c1 -> Carmageddon or Carmageddon + Splat Pack or Carmageddon High Octane or
Carmageddon Max Pack (at the time of writing, sold on GOG)
c1demo -> Carmageddon original demo (downloadable from network)
spdemo -> Splat Pack demo (default, a rare zombie demo is provided)
spxmasdemo -> Splat Pack xmas demo (downloadable from network)

To play with dethrace "the standard way" you ONLY need DATA directory
just put it in the correct drawer.

A rare splat pack demo with zombies is included!

Notes

  • You can switch from/to fullscreen any time using ALT+ENTER
  • Mixing TOOLTYPES and .ini file may cause options collision as .ini file take precedence in most common options.
  • For some versions of the game (like the rare demo included) "boring mode" is enabled by default so enabling it will prevent game from starting.
  • To have a quicker game start just disable cutscenes.
  • For high-res mode (-hires), ensure DATA/64X48X8/ subdirectory exists.
  • For 3DFX mode you need a game patched with 3DFX Patch. High Octane, C1 with Splat Pack or Max Pack have it by default.
  • Do not use GL/3DFX mode with software rendering, it will be unplayable.
  • The GUI launcher (dethrace_gui) provides a user-friendly interface for configuring common options and use dethrace.ini to read/write them.
  • The preload audio flag/TOOLTYPE loads all smacker video audio into memory before playback, avoiding audio starvation during cutscenes. This is recommended on AROS where video decoding is slower due to slow I/O.
  • On most recent non "GOG" versions (eg. High Octane, C1 + Splat Pack) you can convert CD tracks to OGG and create a MUSIC drawer alongside DATA, dethrace will use these files to play music tracks.
  • There is a disabled TOOLTYPE called HW_ACCEL was used for testing it can be safely deleted

I have also uploaded updated versions for ScummVM and Augustus/Julius with:

ScummVM:
- Fixed GL switch to fullscreen graphic artifacts via new Mesa 20 mesa3dgl.library (included)
- Setting ENVARC:SDL2/GL with value of 1 will enable SDL2 accelerated rendering via OpenGL

Augustus/Julius:
Two new TOOLTYPES available:
- HW_CURSOR enable hardware cursor (disabled by default)
- GL will enable SDL2 accelerated rendering via OpenGL, ENVARC:SDL2/GL will be created if does not exist

I tried ZGloom just to test it, but as soon as I choose Gloom Deluxe in the menu, the GUI closes

There are other bugs as well, I know the original author (Andiweli) has already fixed them although.

With AROS One 64-bit on VMware using a native driver, there are no issues—all four chapters: “Zombie Massacre,” “Gloom3,” “Gloom,” and “Gloom Deluxe” work well; no problems were detected.

I can confirm this issue as well, before putting the Geforce gfx card it was fine (I was running the integrated Intel HD), then now I have to launch the game twice, because the first time it quit itself after the first menu.
