I have a general question: what sites should I be checking for availability of second-hard hardware? Ebay? Amazon? Anything else in Europe or North America that makes sense to check?

@Amiwell79

You mentioned ACER 5630 and said that ethernet network does not work? Do you have this laptop? I ask because Neil created a driver for broadcom 4400 network chipset and this seems to be what this laptop has.

Hi All,

Thanks to your feedback and great HCL list maintained by @Jeff1138, I compiled a first, broader list of candicates. The main criteria for that list was acceptable driver support AND availability for purchase second hand, with at least 5 listings on ebay. If you have a system that has good support but is not on the list, please suggest it. If you have questions about specific item, please also let me know.

From this list a sub selection will be made based on topics list degree of hardware support, age of hardware, usability (processing power, 32-bit vs 32/64bit, etc).

Laptop
  • Dell Latitude E6410 (1: deadwood)
  • Dell Latitude E6430 (1: deadwood)

Hi,

Thanks, is the HP T630 a thin client? Not sure if anyone has tested so far, out of my price range at the moment?

Tested a T730 recently until bricking it easily trying to put in a nvs295 or nvs310 - grrr things they never tell you until too late

I also had an hp z600 the compatibility is very good, you can install two separate CPUs otherwise it is identical to the hp z400

Based on HCL I was weighting in T730 vs T630. I looked to be as both have the same level of support, but T630 looks more available on ebay and cheaper ($50-100 range) so that's why I put it instead of T730. Would you suggest putting both as candidates?

what is the graphics card of the hp t630?

It's Radeon, so it would stay with VESA only. Again this is list of candidates, not yet the final, smaller list of recommended hardware.

is a good computer can be a candidate if you are not interested in GL applications

Hi,

No, the T630 is an improvement over the T730 especially the since the T730 can self destruct with external pci-e graphic cards

Most AMD thin clients are good options which is nice as most corps are offloading them now at very cheap prices - important to get the external power supply at the same time as they all can vary in nature
