Re: Noob in dire need of help
Ok I think things are getting solved step by step. Icaros doesn't seem to be able to connect to the internet, as I'm getting "host not found" errors. I'm on a cable router, meaning a computer's IP will be 192.168.0.24 for instance, and the router will be managing the rest. How do I configure Icaros, in order to setup a connection ? Thanks *Edit : I have found the AROS/prefs/network, entered the DNS ips (google's : 8.8.8.8 & 8.8.4.4), I assigned a local IP (192.168.0.24), but I keep getting the "could not resolve host name" error. Gosh I feel dumb since I have installed that OS ;)

Re: Noob in dire need of help
Hello Magorium, Sorry for being unclear. Firstly, I tried to follow the procedure on my desktop machine, in order to create a USB stick. That didn't work. Moreover, this computer has 4 sata drives inside, with important data on them, so I didn't dare fiddling too much, because I didn't want to lose data in case of a wrong doing. Then, today, I could borrow a USB dvd burner. So I burned the iso contained in the Icaros_2.0.1 archive, and plugged the DVD drive to a USB port on my laptop. I wanted to install Icarios as the only OS on the Sony Vaio, so there, I didn't matter if the hard drive got wiped. It's a clean 500Gb sata drive. I was very pleased to see the computer boot from the dvd drive. But instead of seeing the desktop, I got the error screen depicted on the link I provided. Sadly, in my Vaio's BIOS, I can't set the sata controller to "IDE Legacy". While trying with the DVD, the only other USB device that was inserted was the mouse. And it was obviously making a mess. It's working now. Thanks for the help ! Meanwhile, since I have a very old Gericom laptop (from 2003), I tried on it and it installed Icaros properly. I really like what I am seeing so far, even if it's a bit complicated to figure stuff out. The last time I touched an Amiga was in 1995, and it was an Amiga 500. But I'm willing to make the effort, as with lots of other people, I have always dreamt, since 1990, to have a portable Amiga :)

Re: Noob in dire need of help
Hi groaaar, I am afraid the information you have given so far is working a little confusing to me (and seems contradicting). So if you are able to take a deep breath and take a little step back, then it would be appreciated :) First let us start with your aim/goal. Did i understand correctly that you wanted to install Icaros desktop on your Sony Vaio SVE1111 machine ? Did i understand correctly that it is your intention to install Icaros on that machine as only OS ? or is Icaros suppose to run besides windows or linux (dual boot) ? Did i understand correctly that you do not have physical CD-rom drive and therefor wanted to use the usb pen-drive installation route, but that you are afraid you will 'hurt' the computer you ran the installation on ? (and is that another computer ?) It would be appreciated if you could share what you are trying to accomplish on what computer exactly, in order to be able to help you better. fwiw: the error you are seeing (insert bootable media) isn't related to the legacy IDE option in the BIOS as you are using an external (and therefor i assume usb cd-rom drive). More likely the error you are confronted with is due to having conflicting attached usb hardware or having atteched the the cd-rom player on the same header as f.e. your usb-pendrive or keyboard/mouse. AROS ican be very picky with certain USB devices, so better make sure you only have your cd-rom drive attached and nothing else (e.g. try to remove external mouse/keyboard and avoid using any hubs).

Re: Noob in dire need of help
Hello again ! I could borrow an external dvd burner, and did burn the iso. Now I am getting this problem : http://aros-exec.org/modules/newbb/viewtopic.php?topic_id=7530 The workaround explained in this topic isn't accessible to me, as I don't have an IDE Legacy option in the computer's bios. Do I have to understand that I won't be able to install Icaros on my laptop ? Please help ! Thanks

Re: Noob in dire need of help
Hello all :) I have ordered a new laptop for linux mint, so I can finally dedicate my Sony Vaio SVE1111 to Icaros. I downloaded the archive on my main comp (Win7 64bits), Then I uncompressed the iso, ran the virtual machine batch file. It took 30 seconds for Icaros 2.0.1 to load. Out of excitement, I wanted to install the distrib on a 8Gb USB memory stick with an empty FAT32 partition, as I don't have any physical DVD drive. So what happened : 1. First try : I clicked "install aros". I selected the USB drive, chose disk wipe, and got a message "Aros is now ready to install, click to reboot". Reading the manual, rebooting from "hard disk" was supposed to take a few seconds. One CPU Core stayed blocked at 100% for 20 minutes. So I think something went wrong. 2. Second try. Deleted the folder, uncompressed the archive. Started the VM machine again, Icaros booted like a charm. Now the USB won't be wiped anymore, I get an error saying partition can't be created. This is rather annoying. Would it be possible to give me a step by step, idiot-proof way of doing things ? I started to read the joined manual but I am not finding much relevant information, and I am balding enough already these days ;) Thanks in advance ! *Edit* It seems that I am not getting an error when selecting the "Use any Aros existing partition" yet. But I have to enter a drive indentifier, and I don' t know what to do. I am not really eager to delete a windows partition. Is there a way to identify my USB key, or the "virtual hdd" ?

Re: Icaros 2.0 is too buggy for my taste
fwiw cavemann is spot on there. I am aware things can be very frustrating, especially for newcomers (it is also for me for that matter), trying to figure out what workaround to use for particular hardware. The 'problem' is that even when things move forward regarding aros, it also introduces more possible solutions. and that list seems to grow, so that as a newbie you can't just get away with simply try one or two of those solutions and hope for the best (my guess is that in the past many people got away with just pure luck on their side). More possible solutions, means more possible combinations. Since i'm toying with emulated windows lately, i've been reminded of how this was also very true for win9x, and as a result also left users frustrated. If you have the time and patience for it amigamia, then it is definitely worth the effort. if things go wrong for me on a plain boot, then my approach is to turn everything off (BIOS, USB, NODMA, NOAHCI, etc.) and start with what many would call a crippled AROS. If that fails, then it is time to call in the experts :). My main objective is always to be able to start the cd-rom/dvd and as such being able to install Aros/icaros (it never really failed me yet. Some issues regarding newer machines are present though). And from that i try to build up again, preferably with each and every individual option tested, to be able to tell what is the culprit for that specific machine. In the hope it's useful

Re: Icaros 2.0 is too buggy for my taste
I've had some difficult hardware too. If there is a bios setting for 'plugNplay Os', make sure it is set to 'no'. Also if possible set the bios to Ide compatibility or legacy mode. Remove any unneeded Usb items before booting. When the grub menu appears, try a Vesa boot, and edit your choice to read ata=nodma. You might also edit the ata.device, to /Devs/Alt/ata.device. And remove the ahci.device, if needed too. If any of these edits get you booted. You can change grub to make them a part of your regular start-up. I've managed to get recent Aros versions to boot on all my machines. But some I do not use because of constant Sfs drive errors. So not just frustrating for a new user. Anyway, hope this helps.

Re: Icaros 2.0 is too buggy for my taste
After a long time, I decided to bring back to life a broken laptop to try AROS on it. It is a Toshiba Satellite Pro 6100 with a Pentium 4 M, 512MB RAM, 40GB HDD, Toshiba Yamaha sound card (AC97 Compatible) and nVidia Gforce Video Go with 32MB VRAM. Has SD-Card reader and a wireless card as well. Neat little machine for its time. Obsolete by today standards however. So I tried to install Amithlon and the install went fine but still battling with the drivers etc. (WIP here). I then created another partition and installed AmiPUP 1.1 and that went well. All works with the exception of the wireless card, which is 802.11b and doesn't support WPA2 (oh well, will use the ethernet cable I guess). I then tried to install Icaros 2.0.1 and there I felt like throwing the Icaros DVD out the window. Long story short, I could not install it no matter what I tried. The strange thing is that every time I booted from the DVD, it gave a totally different error or just a black screen. I thought maybe the DVD is bad? I tested it on VMWare Player and it booted fine as well as the install. I thought, maybe my laptop doesn't support AROS? I had the latest Aspire OS CD laying around and decided to try it. Booted right in the OS and it installed with no errors whatsoever. It now boots no problem into AspireOS. I see that many other peeps are having problems with the new ABIv0. Looks like it is still very buggy and not a mature product. However, without trying it on so many different platforms, developers wouldn't know what works and what not but I have to say, it is really frustrating from the end user point of view and very discouraging for a first timer.

Re: Icaros Desktop 2.0 caveats and work-arounds
First an answer to an earlier question:
Hi all! Should this have been resolved in the latest Icaros 2.0.1 version? I installed 2.0 and then did a full upgrade to 2.0.1 but changing to one of the problematic themes still causes the boot to stop.
Yes, this theming issue is resolved in icaros 2.0.1. Because you first installed 2.0 the themes were installed. Then you updated to 2.01, which oddly enough did not remove these themes, so the problem stays. Doing a fresh 2.0.1 installation would 'solve' that problem. For some reason the updater seems to be only capable of adding and/or replacing files, and not removing them. Which in this particular case, wouldn't solve the problem. For more information on the theme fixes, see this page from paolone.
Ah cool! I didn't know I could use linux shell sh in AROS.
tbh, i don't know if sh is available on the icaros light version, but it's for sure present on the full dvd version (might perhaps require you to install the development package)
Don't you think it is a bit degrading and bad that a simple command as move screws up the file system (Especially for someone new to AROS)?
Yes, i totally agree on that one. But... it might very well be that this 'problem' is solved with abi-v0-on-trunk. Since i'm of the conservative type, i simply do not like to get burned again on that one ;)
Hopefully, sh will work better than these legacy/obsolete amiga commands.
It should, but then again, i am also not a big fan of linux shells. In that regards i find the amiga shell much more refreshing and understandable, especially for newcomers (if only for showing the template command, and being able to provide options wherever the user wants them to be (minus the /M or /F arguments) ). Of course, the opposite might be true for users coming from or having experience with linux shells. At least we have a choice (and luckily none of them is ms-dos shell) :D

Re: Icaros Desktop 2.0 caveats and work-arounds
Ah cool! I didn't know I could use linux shell sh in AROS. I am going to play with it when I have some time. Don't you think it is a bit degrading and bad that a simple command as move screws up the file system (Especially for someone new to AROS)? I find it somewhat absurd. Hopefully, sh will work better than these legacy/obsolete amiga commands.

Re: Icaros Desktop 2.0 caveats and work-arounds
On the other note, why is move really not a command in AROS? I thought by now it should be there. Have I missed it??
Well ... depending on how you look at things, you missed it ;-p Of course our beloved Amiga OS (and successors like AROS) does not need a move command, as it is part of the copy command ;) One word of warning though: i haven't testdriven the move option with the copy command yet with abi-v0-on-trunk becoming mainstream. It failed miserably before on abi-v0 (and could seriously screw up your hd/partition). Alternatively you could open sh (linux shell) and use the mv command. Also alternatively: fire up directory opus (any which version) and move the files using the move button. I am not aware of a move functionality in Wanderer or Scalos (but that might be because i haven't looked for it intensively). just to make sure: i would advice AGAINST moving files at all as it ended for me (and other AROS users) in a screwed up file-system. Just a copy-delete does the trick as well (and as you have shown).

That worked by the way. Just in case someone else has the same issue, this may save them a few seconds. Thanks ncafferkey for the instructions. On the other note, why is move really not a command in AROS? I thought by now it should be there. Have I missed it??

Re: Icaros Desktop 2.0 caveats and work-arounds
OK so maybe a list should be provided of the bad ones? This way users don't run into this endless loop? I tried the steps described above but that has other problems on its own, which made me think more. The instructions say "Move" C:Decoration to SYS:Decoration. Well, to start there is no move command in the C directory and I could only find copy. Why isn't move a command in there in the first place? Since copy was the closest to moving anything, I tried that but SYS:Storage is located on the DVD as opposed to the actual Hard Drive with the screwed up theme settings. The local HDD gets AROS: as an assignment. So the best I could do was:
cd AROS: copy C:Decoration AROS:Storage delete C:Decoration
Re: Icaros Desktop 2.0 caveats and work-arounds
afaik and unfortunately, no. To my knowledge, theming exist of a couple of variables that are required to make a theme work. In the new on-trunk (that became mainstream) some additional variables are needed and which most (old existing) themes does not contain, ergo they fail. So, this can only be solved by these 'old' themes being upgraded/updated (and which currently isn't done (yet) ). At least this is how i understood, but i might be a bit off here and there.

Re: Icaros Desktop 2.0 caveats and work-arounds
AROS won't boot when some themes are selected. Avoid choosing the os3.1 or mason themes. If you want a similar appearance to the os3.1 theme, move "C:Decoration" to "SYS:Storage". If you've already selected a broken theme, you can recover the situation as follows: Boot from your installation media. Move "AROS:C/Decoration" as described above. Reboot from your HD, and select a working theme. Restore "Decoration" to its original location ("C:").
Hi all! Should this have been resolved in the latest Icaors 2.0.1 version? I installed 2.0 and then did a full upgrade to 2.0.1 but changing to one of the problematic themes still causes the boot to stop.

Re: Bad_IP Protector on aros-exec
Ah, in case you are capable of cooking up some code yourself, then please be my guest :) fwiw: if you have icaros installed (the dvd version wand selected to install all or in case you selected development package manually) then things are already in place :D At least it let's you compile using the gcc compiler natively. On a hosted you install hosted and can download a nighlty and copy the development directory (to replace the one on your hosted install) to get things going. Setting up a cross-compiler is a bit more work, and how to do that depends on your platform.

Thanks magorium, it is not in a hurry, maybe I download the aros sdk after christmas and try to compile some solutions with sourcecode from the aminet as in good old AMIGA times ;-)

Re: Bad_IP Protector on aros-exec
Thanks Ga-Venga. Having taken a closer look, i am not going to mess with that code (it is messy enough of itself :D ) . I'll try implement my own solution, but that's something for the somewhat longer run as i am currently working on some other projects. Alternatively (in case you can't hold your breath ;) ) you can achieve the same goal by some scripting magic. There is the version command as well as a command to set the comment (the name escapes me atm :o ).
